Biophilia in the Factory

Curated by Dr. Rita Trombin

Introduction

In collaboration with a cosmetics and medical device formulation and manufacturing company in northern Italy, a unique training initiative was developed where biophilia entered the factory floor. Millions of people in Italy work daily in factories operating day and night, making connection with nature critical to promoting workers' health, wellbeing, relationships and productivity. This training, which took place at the company's production site, aims to provide staff with the tools to learn about biophilia and integrate its characteristics and benefits into their daily lifestyles.

Background and Objectives

Factory workers are often deprived of the benefits of a nature-connected environment. The main goals of this training are:

1. Provide workers with strategies to appreciate and benefit from natural elements in their work environment.

2. Promote wellness and health by teaching how spaces, experiences, and a biophilic lifestyle can improve physical and mental health.

3. Increase productivity and relationships through practical actions.

Implementation and Development

The training was structured to include theoretical aspects on the principles of Biophilia, Biophilic Design, and scientific evidence of their benefits. Collaborative activities and group work were also conducted to increase a biophilic and sustainable lifestyle both on and off the production site. Projects and challenges encouraged the practical application of the concepts learned, while also showcasing Adriano Olivetti's legacy through the science of Biophilic Design.

Results and Impact

education led to increased awareness and adoption of biophilic practices, improving worker wellbeing. The proposals presented encouraged communication and collaboration among staff, promoting engagement with the physical work environment. The enthusiastic response from participants confirmed the importance and effectiveness of bringing nature into one's life and environments, guided by a simple yet enlightening principle: we are nature.
