Curated by Arch. Luca Iotti
Introduction
The project focuses on creating an outdoor educational classroom for children aged 4 to 6. The goal is not only to improve the existing courtyard equipment, but also to promote outdoor education, stimulate curiosity and strengthen children's connection with nature through the integration of existing natural elements and those introduced in the project.
Background and Objectives
Following the reopening of schools in the post-Covid period, there was experimentation with new teaching methods, with a particular emphasis on outdoor spaces. The challenge was to design a year-round usable outdoor space that would not only transfer usual outdoor activities, but also introduce new permanent activities beyond the post-Covid distancing period.
Implementation and Development
The project was divided into three main elements:
- Discovery classroom: the trees present become an active part of learning; the walls house trellises and vertical pot holders for direct learning from nature.
- Covered classroom: serves as a shelter and meeting place in inclement weather and to encourage group dialogue and storytelling.
- Free play area: also designed with the presence of trees that provide shade and welcome for children.
These spaces interact with existing elements of the place, enhancing the connection with the local culture and ecosystem. The approach taken includes design methods integrated with the environment, use of sustainable materials, and innovative practices for continuous interaction between children and their natural environment.
